According to conversations with his son, Irwin Abrams, Lew was married to Belle in 1902 at the home of her parents, P.E. Newman and Pauline Redlick Newman, on Page Street in San Francisco. While most knew him as "Lew," he was sometimes called "J.L.," especially in business circles. He was a successful retailer, owning a store in downtown San Francisco for much of his career. He died of a heart attack at the age of 69 at a hotel in Carmel, California.
