About James Philbrick, Jr.

James was a mariner and lived on the homestead in Hampton, NH.

(From History of Hampton:)

"He engaged much in town business, as selectman, surveyor, lot-layer, and in other capacities. From 1690 to 1700, his books show him to have been trading between Martha's Vineyard and Hampton, in lumber, wood, hides, spices, molasses, iron and wooden ware, cloths, cutlery and other merchandise. He was once taken on the high seas, by a French privateer, which captured his vessel as a prize. A storm arising, he magnanimously guided his captors to safe harborage, and in gratitude, they gave him back his vessel. During the storm, he begged them to spare an old Bible they were about to throw overboard. That Bible is now owned by Joseph A. Philbrick. It is printed in black letters, and was published in 1583."

Note : He is called 'Lieutenant' in History of Hampton above and 'Captain' in Philbrick Genealogy.
