In 1881 Lilian Mateer, as a missionary teacher, traveled with her brother Robert to China. She served at her brother Calvin Wilson Mateer's school in Tsingtao until her marriage to William Stokes Walker, a Baptist missionary. In 1885 the failure of her husband's health compelled their return to the United States.
