JOHN MURRAY, 1st Duke of Atholl, so created 30 June 1703, as also MARQUESS OF TILLIBARDIN [sic], EARL OF STRATHTAY AND STRATHARDLE, VISCOUNT OF BALWHIDDER [sic], GLENALMOND AND GLENLYON, AND LORD MURRAY, BALVENIE AND GASK, Co Perth (S), with remainder, in default of his own male issue, to the sons of his deceased f, and earlier 27 July 1696 EARL OF TULLIBARDIN, VISCOUNT GLENALMOND, and LORD MURRAY (S) for life only, KT (Feb 1703/4), PC (S temp WILLIAM III, GB 1712–14); born 24 Feb 1659/60; a Pncpl Sec State Scotland, High Commr S Parl 1696–98, Chllr St Andrews U 1697–1724, Lord Privy Seal Scotland 1703 and 1713–14, opposed Act of Union of 1707, Lord High Commr Gen Assembly Ch Scotland 1712–14, Extrdy Lord of Session 1712–24, rep S peer 1710–15, Ld-Lt Perthshire 1715–24; married 1st 24 May 1683 Lady Katharine Douglas later Hamilton (died 11 Jan 1707), daughter of William Duke of Hamilton and Anne, Duchess of Hamilton (qv) in her own right, and had, with two other sons and five other daughters:

• 1a John, Marquess of Tullibardine; born 6 May 1684, killed in action Battle of Malplaquet (claimed as a victory by both British and French) 11 Sept 1709 during War of Spanish Succession
• 2a William, Marquess of Tullibardine, Duke of Rannoch, Marquess of Blair, Earl of Glen Tilt, Viscount Glenshie and Lord of Strathbran (all S), so created by titular James III 1 Feb 1716/7 with remainder to heirs male; born 14 April 1689; RN; Jacobite 1715 Uprising, hence attainted 17 Feb 1715/6 and his titles settled on his younger brother by Parl; escaped abroad and returned to Scotland with a Spanish force 1719, but after a fresh Jacobite defeat returned to the Continent and lived in exile under the name Kateson; took part in '45 Uprising, when arrested and imprisoned Tower of London, where died unmarried 9 July 1746

(102) John, 2nd Marquess of Atholl, born 24th February 1659-60; died 14th November 1724. On 27th July 1696 he was created for life Earl of Tullibardine, Viscount Glenalmond, and Lord Murray. On 30th June 1703 he was created Duke of Atholl, Marquess of Tullibardine, Earl of Strathtay and Strathardle, Viscount of Balquhidder, Glenalmond, and Glenlyon, and Lord Murray, Balvenie, and Gask. He married, first, 24th May 1683, Katherine, daughter of William and Anne, Duke and Duchess of Hamilton. She died 17th January 1707, having had:

• 102(a) John, Marquess of Tullibardine, born 6th May 1684 ; killed at battle of Malplaquet 11th September 1709.
• 102(b) William, Marquess of Tullibardine after his brother's death, born 14th April 1689; died unmarried in Tower of London 9th July 1746. He was "out" in 171 5 on the Jacobite side, and on 1st February 1717 he was created by Prince James Edward Duke of Rannoch, Marquis of Blair, Earl of Glen Tilt, Viscount of Glenshiel, and Lord Strathbran. He returned to Scotland in 1719 in the Jacobite interest, and was defeated at Glenshiel, when he again escaped to the Continent. In 1745 he returned to Scotland, and was arrested after Culloden and committed to the Tower.
