Loren C. Guernsey graduated with honors in 1895 from Union College in Schenectady, New York, where he excelled in extemporaneous speech. Loren came to the Philippines in 1901 to help establish the public school system. Sadly, he was among the list of casualties within the first twenty months after the arrival of the USS Thomas. He died from diphtheria on 02 May 1902 in Balayan, Batangas, Philippines. He left his wife, Minnie (also a teacher) and three small children -- Bernard, Iva Lucinda and Loren Paul (born in the Philippines) -- who eventually returned to the United States.
