LOUIS, son of RICHWIN Comte de Charpeigne & his wife Mathilde --- (-after 1019). A charter dated 1019, which records an agreement between Berthold Bishop of Toul and "Olricus miles", is subscribed by "Riquini comitis, Ludovicus comitis patris eius, item Ludovici filii eius, Theodorici fratris eius"[4]. same person as…? LOUIS ([1015]-[29 Aug 1071/1076]). This co-identity is proposed by Europäische Stammtafeln[5]. It is true that it presents no chronological difficulties, but it is not the only theory which has been proposed to explain the origin of Louis Comte de Mousson. Comte de Mousson. The Chronicle of Alberic de Trois-Fontaines names "comiti Montionis Ludovico" when recording his marriage[6]. The Herimanni Augiensis Chronicon records that "Ludowicus comes" expelled "Reginoldum principem, reginæ Agnetis avunculum, sed Heinrico regi inimicum" (Renaud Comte Palatin de Bourgogne) from "castellum…Mons Piligardæ" (Montbéliard/Mömpelgard)[7]. He had possessions in the south of Alsace and around Hagenau, covering the southern part of the county of Sundgau as far as Basel and including Héricourt, Belfort, Altkirch and Ferrette, as well as the château de Montbéliard temporarily[8]. He was in dispute with Gérard d'Alsace Duke of Lower Lotharingia in 1057 and 1063 over the inheritance of Pope Leo IX, his maternal uncle[9]. "Heinricus…rex" founded a market at "in villa Villach…in comitatu Francisci Ludewici comitis" by charter dated 8 Feb 1060[10]. "Heinricus…rex" granted property "in pagis Cletgowe et Hegowe in comitatibus Gerungi et Lodawici comitis" to "comiti Eberhardo" by charter dated 1067[11]. "Heinricus…rex" donated property "in villa Chambo in pago Einriche in comitatu Lodowici comitis" to St Suitbertsstift at Kaiserswerth by charter dated 1067[12]. He appears to have challenged the succession of Thierry Duke of Lorraine in 1070, claiming the title himself[13]. Comte Louis is last recorded 29 Aug 1071 in a declaration of his son Frederic, but died before 1076 when his widow invested Sigefroi as abbot of Saint-Mihiel[14].

m (1038) SOPHIE of Upper Lotharingia, daughter of FREDERIC II Duke of Upper Lotharingia & his wife Mathilde of Swabia ([1018]-21 Jan 1093). The Chronicle of Alberic de Trois-Fontaines names "comitissa Barri…Sophia" as wife of "comiti Montionis Ludovico", specifying that she was sister of "Beatrix marchisa" but incorrectly naming "Sigefridi fratris Frederici" as their father[15]. Her share of the succession of her brother consisted of the abbey of Saint-Mihiel and its dependencies, the castles of Bar, Amance and Mousson, the southern part of her family's ancestral lands[16]. She entered into possession of these lands at the time of her marriage[17]. She requested Pibon Bishop of Toul to grant the franchise of the chapel in the château of Amance, the 1076 document specifying that the castle had belonged to her grandfather inherited from Graf Folmar[18]. The Obituaire de Saint-Mansuy records the death "21 Jan" of "Sophia comitissa"[19].

Comte Louis & his wife had seven children, all of whom are named (as deceased) in the 8 Mar 1105 charter of the couple's daughter-in-law Ermentrude de Bourgogne, listed in the following order:

  • 1. BRUNO (-young). ….

Louis de Montbéliard

Jump to: navigation, search

Louis Scarpone, born between 1005 and 1019, died between 1070 and 1073, was Count of Montbeliard, of Altkirch and of Ferrette (so that some authors describe as Count Sundgau) and his marriage Count of Bar and lord of Monsoon. He was the son of Richwin, Count Scarpone and Hildegarde of Eguisheim, sister of Pope Leo IX.

Sophie of Bar and his sister Beatrice, daughters of Duke Frederick II of Lorraine had been collected in 1033 by their maternal aunt, Gisela of Swabia, the wife of the Holy Roman Emperor Conrad II. Lorraine had been entrusted to the Count of Verdun Gothelo I., but the Emperor want to reinforce his influence against the house of Verdun, which was soon to show signs of agitation, married his niece Sophie Louis in 1038. This marriage brought him the County Bar and the lordship of Monsoon.

A little later, in 1042, the emperor gave the counties of Montbeliard, of Altkirch and Ferrette. In 1044, he fought successfully Renaud I., Comte de Bourgogne, who had revolted against the emperor.

In 1047, the Duke of Lorraine, Godfrey II rebelled and was defeated. Lorraine, confiscated, had been given to Adalbert of Alsace, then Gerard d'Alsace, who died in 1070. Because his wife was the daughter of the first dukes of Lorraine, Louis claimed the duchy, but the Emperor Henry IV ruled in favor of Thierry II, the son of Gerard. This was different to the origin of the rivalry between the Counts of Bar and the dukes of Lorraine, a rivalry that will not disappear in 1420, with Rene d'Anjou, Isabella I of Lorraine and the union of the two houses.

Louis died shortly after. His wife Sophie of Bar, it had:

  1. Thierry (1045 † 1105), Count of Montbéliard, Bar and Monsoon
  2. Bruno
  3. Louis, cited in 1080
  4. Friedrich († 1092), Marquis of Susa
  5. Sophie, married Folmar, Count Froburg
  6. Beatrice († 1092), married Berthold I of Zähringen († 1078), Duke of Carinthia
  7. Matilda, married Hugh de Dagsburg († 1089)
