About Thomas Mann Randolph Talcott

Civil War Confederate Army Officer. Civil Engineer. He graduated from the United States Military Academy and became Chief Engineer for the State of Virginia. In 1861 he was appointed lieutenant of artillery in the Confederate Army. Early in 1862 he was captured and exchanged. He was promoted to major and served on Robert E. Lee's staff. Late in 1863 he assumed command of the 1st Confederate Engineers as Lieutenant Colonel. He advised on the placement of artillery, laid out defensive lines, repaired railroads, and conducted mine operations. Colonel Talcott's engineers fired the final volley at the Union cavalry just before Lee surrendered to Grant at Appomattox. After the war he engaged in the railroad business. He and his father, Andrew Talcott, also an engineer, were involved in the planning and development of the community of Bon Air, Virginia.
