About Lula Smith (Palmer)

On the 13th day of June in 1900, when the U.S. Census was taken in Taylor, Navajo County, Arizona, Lula Palmer was 9 months old, and was living with her parents, Alma Zimira Palmer and Alzada Sophia Kartchner Palmer, who were 46 and 42 years old. They had been married for twenty six years and had brought ten children into the world, nine of whom were still living. Alma and Alzada were married in 1874. Also in the home were Lula's siblings, Jorden, 19, Jon E. 14, Sally J. 12, Arthur, 9, Dora, 5, and Rosetta, 3. Two of Alma and Alzada's older children, Wesley, born in 1875, and Ida, born in 1879, were no longer living at home, since they were already 24 and 21 years old. In 1900, Wesley, 24, was had been married to his wife Lillian A., 20 years old, for 3 years, having been married in 1897. In their home was their two year old son Preston W., born in October, 1897. Wesley and Lillian were living in St. Joseph, Navajo County, Arizona Territory, and Wesley was also working as a farmer and owned his farm free of a mortgage.

According to this census record, Alma had been born in Utah, his father in Canada and his mother in Missouri. His wife, Alzada, had been born in California, her father in Pennsylvania, and her mother in Missouri. All of their children were born in Arizona, except Wesley and Lillian, who were also born in Utah. Alma was working as a farmer and he owned his own farm free from a mortgage.

Living next door was Louis Decker, 26, his wife, May H., 24, and their one year old son, Louis. Next door to Louis and May was Louis' brother, Zachriah Decker, 28, his wife Laura M., 25, and their two children, Edwin, 3 and Jesse N., 1 year old. These were two sons of Zechariah Bruyn Decker and his wife Emma Smith, and their children would have been cousins of Lula's husband, Henry Aikens Smith. (NOTE: Louis and Zachriah Decker were the grandchildren of Jesse Nathaniel Smith and Emma Smith. Margaret Fletcher West Smith was Emma West Smith's sister, Jesse Nathaniel Smith's plural wife, and Henry Aikens Smith's grandmother/)

By 1910, A.Z. Palmer and his wife Alzada S., 56 and 52, were living with their children, Arthur, 19, Dora, 15, Rose, 13 and Lula, 10. Now A.Z. is working as a Merchant, and Arthur is a salesman for his father. Living nearby is Wesley Palmer, 34 and his wife Lillian, 30, their son, Preston W., 12, and daughters Lette Alzada, 7, Marie L., 5, and Sariah, 2. Wesley and Lillian had been married for 13 years, had 6 children, 4 of whom are still living. Wesley is now working as a cattle man and his son Preston is a farm laborer on the home farm.

In 1920, Alma Z. and Alzada are 67 and 62 years old, and the only one of their children still living at home with them is Lula, age 20. Alma is still working as a merchant in his own retail store. Living nearby is their son, Arthur, 29, and his wife Evaline G., 31, and their children, Leroy A., 8, Ila, 6, Ima, 5, Harvey G., 3 years 4 months, Dean H., 2 years, 7 months, and Edwin G., 10 months old. Arthur is still working as a merchant in his father's retail store. On September 1, 1920, Lula Palmer married Henry Aikens Smith. Henry was born March 27, 1898, in Snowflake, Navajo County, Arizona. to Joseph West Smith and Della Fish Smith. When Henry completed his World War I Draft Registration Card on September 13, 1918, he described himself as being of medium height and build with dark grey eyes and brown hair and was working as a farmer.

In 1930, Alzada is a 72 year old widow living in Mesa, Maricopa, Arizona, in the home of her daughter, Lula, 30 and her husband, Henry Aikens Smith, 32, and their children, Guy P., 8, Rozel, 5, and Harry, 2 years and 11 months old. Lula and Henry own their own home which is valued at $5,000. Lula and Henry have been married for 10 years, and Henry is working as a Life Insurance Agent. Six years later, Alzada Sophia Kartchner Palmer passed away on January 8, 1936, at the age of 78, and was buried in Mesa, Arizona. She had been born January 5, 1858, in California.

By 1940, Lula and Henry were living in a home rented for $32.00 per month located at 1132 Spence Street in Los Angeles, California, having previously lived in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1935. Henry is 42, Lula is 41, and their children are Guy P., 18, Rozel, 15, Terry C., 13, and Derial E., 9, Barry M., 2. Henry had completed 3 years of college, Lula, 2, and their son, Guy, 1 year. Their younger children were still in school. Henry is working as a railway mail clerk for the railway post office, and for the 52 weeks he worked in 1939 at 40 hours per week, Henry earned $2,450.00 in income.

I don't know where Lula and Henry and their family lived after 1940, however, Lula passed away April 18, 1978, and was last living in either San Gabriel or Temple City, Los Angeles County, California at the time of her death. Henry lived for another 18 years and passed away on May 14, 1996, at the age of 98 years old. He was living in Temple City, Los Angeles County, California at the time of his death. However, Henry did remarry after his wife, Lula's death, to a Cora E. Turner in 1980. At the time of their marriage, Henry was 82 and Cora was 65 years old, she having been born about 1915. They were married in Los Angeles, California.

Lula and Henry's son Guy Palmer Smith, who was born October 1, 1921, was living in West Covina in 1993, at 932 S. Vanhorn Avenue, and also lived at 1018 S. Glendora Avenue in West Covina, as well as 1117 Laverta Terrace, Los Angeles. However, when Guy passed away on October 7, 2008, he was living in Provo, Utah. According to a record for Guy on Find A Grave.com, he died peacefully in his sleep of an apparent heart attack at the age of 87 years old. He resided at 2862 West 750 North in Provo, Utah, at the time of his death. He married Lola Foy in Mesa, Arizona on June 20, 1947. She died on October 16, 1960. On June 23, 1961, he married LaRae Cheney Anderson.

Guy was honorably discharged from the army after World War II. He was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints having served in many callings including twice as bishop and as an ordinance worker in the Los Angeles Temple. He was a successful CPA in private practice for 37 years until his retirement in 1989. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather and was beloved by many people. He had an infectious laugh which crinkled his eyes. He was kind and steady and his children adored him. He was sharp and sensitive to the end. We weren't quite ready for him to leave us.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, LaRae Smith; three sons, James L. Anderson of Eagle Mountain, Utah; Randy C. Smith of Portland, Oregon; and Mark W. Smith of Salt Lake City, Utah; two daughters, Claudia Ross of Grand Terrace, California; and Becky Smith of Pacifica, California; 18 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services were held on Monday, October 20, 2008 at 1 p.m. in the Parkway Stake Center, 2801 West 620 North, Provo. Interment was at the Provo City Cemetery. Guy's obituary was published in the Deseret News on 10/16/2008.

Guy's wife, LaRae Chesney Smith passed away on May 12, 2009, and she is buried with her husband in the Provo City Cemetery.
