About Grizel Robitaille (Warren)

Grizel Warren (1662-1750) was captured on 28 June 28 when Indians attacked the Otis garrison and killed her husband. She and her 3-month-old daughter Margaret were sold to the French in Canada. She was taken into service by the Sieur de Maricour, and is said to have befriended her fellow captives and to have aided Fr. Meriel in his ministrations among them. She was re-baptized as a Roman Catholic on 9 May 1693 and renamed Marie-Madeleine. Her godparents were Jacques LeBer, Merchant, and Dame Marie-Madeleine Dupont, wife of Charles le Moyne, Esquire, Seigneur de Maricour. Grizel remarried, was naturalized as a French citizen in 1710, and had other children. Her father left her 5 shillings in 1700; she is not mentioned in her mother's 1712 will. Grizel died at the age of 89, having been bedridden for the last 9 or 10 years of her life.
