Civil War Confederate Army Officer, Raleigh Mayor. He joined the Confederate Army in April of 1861. As a Captain he was put in charge of his battery ("Manly's Battery") in April of 1862. He participated in conflicts at Williamsburg, Seven Pines, Cold Harbor, Savage Station, Malvern Hill, Crampton's Gap, Fredericksburg, and Gettysburg. He was promoted to the rank of Major. In 1875, he was served as the mayor of Raleigh, North Carolina, and was elected to consecutive one year terms until his death in 1882. (bio by: Evening Blues)
