De Wikipedia, la enciclopedia libre , CA, EN, ES, IT, PT

\n

For another Juan Manuel of Castile, the son of this person, see Juan Manuel, Duke of Peñafiel.

\n

Juan Manuel (Carrion de los Condes, 1234 – Peñafiel, December 25, 1283, sometimes called only Manuel) was the son of Ferdinand III of Castile and his wife Elisabeth of Hohenstaufen. The name Manuel was given to him to commemorate his maternal grandmother's roots in Imperial Byzantium[citation needed]. He was Lord of Escalona, Peñafiel and Villena.

\n

He married twice. His first wife, whom he married in 1260 in Soria was Constança of Aragon (1239-1269?), daughter of James I of Aragon. Two children were born of this marriage:

\n

Alfonso (born 1260/1261, died in Montepellier, France in 1276) Died without issue.

\n

Violante Manuel (born 1265, died in Lisbon, Portugal in 1314), lady of Elche and Medellin. Married circa 1287 to Affonso of Portugal, son of Alfonso III of Portugal.

\n

His second marriage after Constaca's death was in 1274/1275 to Beatrice of Savoy (d. 23 February 1292), daughter of Amadeus IV of Savoy. One child was born of this marriage:

\n

Juan Manuel (1282-1348), Duke of Penafiel.

\n

Children from other women include:

\n

Sancho Manuel (1283-after 1345), Lord of Infantado and Carrion. First married Maria Rodriguez de Castañeda, Second married Ines Dias de Toledo. With issues in both marriage.
