על מר זוטרא השלישי בן מר זוטרא השני נאמר:

בספר "סדר עולם זוטא" מסופר שמר זוטרא, לאחר עלייתו לארץ, ישב בראש ועד החכמים שבארץ ישראל, ה"סנהדרין". הוא וצאצאיו, במשך שבעה דורות, ישבו בראש ועד החכמים. שמותיהם: מר זוטרא, רב גוריא, מר זוטרא (הרביעי), רב יעקב, רב מיגס, רב נחמיה ורב אבדימי.

In the ninth century, probably in Palestine, Seder ʿOlam Zuta (Smaller World Order, including an excerpt of Seder ʿOlam rabba) listed the Palestinian leaders of the academy of Tiberias and traced the Palestinian branch of the family of Mar Zutra III, the son of the Exilarch, the representative of the Babylonian Jews, who had become the head of the academy of Tiberias after 520 C.E. (neubauer, II, x, 68-87; lazarus).
