About Marcial Torres

Marcial lived in Abiquiu, Rio Arriba County, NM. He was married two times and both times his hacienda was raided by comanche nomads. Both times his wives and daughters were taken captive. Some of his sons were taken too, others died at the hands of the enemies. He moved from Abiquiu after the last raid and remarried at Picuris (Penasco), Taos County, New Mexico. His wife's sister became his daughter-in-law. So it was a father and son that married a mother and daughter. He brought with him four cows and a grinding stone. He paid a doctor one cow for medical services, another cow he traded for a shirt, another he paid the priest for the marriage ceremony, and the last cow he butchered for the wedding. When the Comanches again raided this hacienda, which was near the current day Picuris Pueblo, his family members were abducted as well exept for three or four who happened to be with their maternal grandparents. He died defending his family and hacienda. He was found dead on top of a pile of corn . At the time of his death he owned property at Abiquiu, in Taos, and in Picuris. Some of his daughters from the first wife managed to escape from the Indians and began to claim their father's estate. This settlement went on for several decades. His second father-in-law insisted that they needed to leave land for those who were still captive; because as they had escaped so could those who were still captive escape. It took the Governor to step in and side with the father-in-law to settle the estate.
