MARGARET BRAITHWAITE, possibly born in England or Ireland, ca.1675. She married ROBERT JOHNSON in the Co. Carlow Monthly Meeting in Ireland in 1693. Margaret and Robert Johnson had nine children in Coolboy, Co. Wicklow, Ireland before emigrating to America in 1713-1714.

another possible (but unproven) candidate for Margaret's identity, discussed below. The records of the Carlow Monthly Meeting in Ireland (which also give the births of the children of Robert and Margaret) show that Robert Johnson of Coolboy, co. Wicklow, and Margaret Braithwaite were married on 29 6th month [August] 1693. The records of the Wicklow Monthly Meeting also record the marriage, spelling the bride's name as "Brathwit" and giving her place of residence as Ballynacurrig. (The Wicklow record also gives Robert's occupation: "Glazier").
Unfortunately, these are from the very poor quality films of the Irish digest records available from the Family History Library, which are very hard to use, because the job of filming was so poorly done (overexposed) that a significant number of the pages are completely unreadable, making it very hard (and on occasion impossible) to search the records using these films. To my knowledge, the Family History Library has not filmed any of the original Irish Quaker records, so the lack of easy access to the original records, plus the extremely poor quality of the filming of the digest copies, makes Irish Quaker research much hard to do thanother areas where the records are more easily available.Several years ago, I noticed that there was a birth entry in the records of the Swarthmore Monthly Meeting in Lancashire for a Margaret Braithwaite of the correct age. Since quite a few of the Irish Quakers originally came from Lancashire, it seemed to me that she made a good candidate to be the same person as Robert Johnson's wife. These entries show the births of four children of James and Katherine Braithwaite of Fieldhead, in the parish of Hawkshead, co. Lancaster. The chldren of James and Katherine Braithwaite were:James, b. 6 4m 1658John, b. 21 2m. 1661Margrett, b. 15 6m 1665Benjamin, b. 18 1m 1666/7(I copied these entries a couple of days ago from the Lancashire QM records, which spell the name "Brathwaite", but they should also appear in the Swarthmoor MM records, which I don't have immediate access to.)Note that Robert and Margaret Johnson also had children named James (the eldest) and Benjamin, but I am unaware of any other evidence which would link this Margaret as the same person as Margaret (Braithwaite) Johnson.By the way, Braithwaite was BY FAR the most common name in the parish of Hawkshead, where the above James and Katherine Braitwaite lived. The early parish registers have been published, and the index requires several pages just to list the page numbers on which the hundreds upon many hundreds of Braithwaite entries occur. Thus, if these are the right people, it would be a VERY difficult project to try and sort them all out among the vast sea of others in the area with the same surname (one reason I have not made the attempt).Stewart Baldwin
