Margaret acquired a passion for collecting of objets de vertu - her collections eventually became the largest in Britain, greater than Sir Hans Sloane's.

Her passion for native and exotic plants matched her obsession for collecting. She knew most of the leading lights in the predominantly male world of botany and plant exploration, being a friend of Philip Miller, Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander.
