Maria Els (Mary Elisabeth) was the daughter of Philipp and Elsbeth Fischbach. She was christened in 1687 at Trupbach. Her godmother was Elisabeth, wife of Hermann Otterbach the 1714 colonist. Mary Elisabeth immigrated to the Virginia colony with her parents. She had a younger sister who was given the identical first and last names as she, born almost ten years later. There is no indication of how the family distinguished the two sisters.
It is believed that it was the older Mary Elisabeth who married Melchoir Brumbach of Muesen. He immigrated to Virginia, a bachelor, and married there. He left no male heirs, but four daughters: Agnes, who married Henry Utterback; Elisabeth, who married Stephen Hatzenbiller; Mary Gertrude, who married Jacob Neusebwander and Catherine, who married Christopher Windler.
