As her name implies, she was probably born in the Slave Lodge (Lozee, Loods, Logie). Many of the first locally born slaves had European fathers working in and around the early and rather primitiveFort. Douwe Gerbrand Steyn, a company master stone-mason who arrived in the Cape in about 1669, married Maria Lozee 'van der Caab' in about 1685. At this time Maria was said to already have had a three-year old child by the name of Jacobus. It is disputed that this child was actually Douwe’s child. But Douwe formally adopted the child after his marriage to Maria, giving him the name ‘Steijn’. Douwe and Maria had a daughter in in 1692, Anna (who married Martinus Prins) and thus all of today’s Steyn’s are actually descendants of Jacobus Steyn.

One school of thought suggests that Jacobus was actually Douw’s son born illegitimately while Maria was still a slave. Another school of thought suggests that this was not the case and that Jacobus’ father was also a slave.

Jacobus married Maria Potgieter in 1704 and from this union most Steyns in South Africa are descended. A number of other Steyns also married free slaves.

It is possible that most of the Steyn descendants in South Africa are descendants of two slaves and not of Douwe Gerbrand Steyn even though Jacobus was formally adopted.

In 1683 Douwe Gerbrand Steyn became one of the early pioneer farmers in Stellenbosch by starting the farm Oude Molen. It was here in 1685 that he brought his bride Maria Lozee van der Caab. He later acquired the farm Rustenberg in 1692 after selling Oude Molen in 1687. He died in 1700 and Maria Lozee remarried to Paul Heyns in 1701. Maria and Douw’s marriage was one of a handful of mixed marriages at the time. It should be noted that there were later also other Steyn’s that married slaves over the course of the 1700s.
