Baptized in Leyden, Holland , on April 5, 1617, and emigrated with her family to New Amsterdam in 1624. She was constantly in trouble with the authorities for infractions and violations of law associated with her and Jan's tavern business, and was finally banished from New Amsterdam in December 1644.

She married Cornelis Volckertsen Viele somewhere around 1640. Cornelis and his brother Dirck were among the earliest settlers of New Amsterdam around 1622. They were emigrants from Hoorn, on the peninsula of North Holland, but they appear to have been Danes, or Scandinavian by birth. Dirk was closely associated with the Swedes and Norwegians in the colony of New Netherland. Their family name Volckertsen was actually a Dutch refinement of Holgersen, which Dirck sometimes used.
