Madame Toussaint Giroux, une Amérindienne… Dans son livre Les ancêtres beauportois, Michel Langlois établit l’origine française de Toussaint Giroux (1633-1717), tisserand, fils de Jean Giroux et de Marguerite Quilleron, originaire du hameau de Bignon, paroisse de Réveillon, Mortagne-au-Perche, France.

Toujours selon l’auteur, née en 1641 et inhumée à Beauport le 22 novembre 1684, Marie Godard est d’origine inconnue. Les ouvrages de Drouin la déclarent aussi inconnue d’origine. Jean-Paul Létourneau, dans son Histoire des peuples amérindiens, tribus Algonquins, l’identifie indienne, algonquine.

\n

Au mariage de Toussaint Giroux et de Marie Godard, le 29 septembre 1654, à Notre-Dame de Québec, aucun parent identifié et le mariage n’est pas célébré à l’église. Il y a pourtant une chapelle au collège de la Beaupré de Jésus. Ce sera là un indice de mixité ethnique. Quant à lui, l’historien Denys Delage écrit que la coutume du clergé est de renier le métissage, de laisser dans l’anonymat les parents lors d’un baptême ou un mariage mixte.

Un fils de Toussaint, Michel Giroux épouse Thérèse Provost, fille métisse de Martin Provost et de Marie O livier Manitouabeouitch. Ce couple s’installe à Rivière Ouelle, un endroit peuplé d’Algonquins, d’Etchemins et de Malécites. Les Saint-Pierre et Pelletier de Rivière Ouelle sont décrits par l’historien Francis Parkman comme « des femmes à l’aspect sauvage aux visages brûlés par le soleil ».

De plus, Jean Giroux et Suzanne Bélanger s’unissent à Beauport, Monique Giroux à Noël Vachon en 1695, toujours à la Nativité de Beauport, Toussaint Giroux fils et Thérèse Dauphin, se marient tous en face de l’église. Selon l’anthropologue Rémi Savard, reprenant l’abbé Morault, cette pratique caractérise l’intermariage.

Marie Godard décédée, Toussaint Giroux père se remarie à Beauport, le 29 octobre 1686, à Thérèse Leblanc, veuve de Pierre Vallée.

En conclusion de son article, Dominique Côté établit : « À la lumière de tous ces faits, il est clairement démontré à notre avis, que tous les descendants de Toussaint Giroux et de Marie Godard sont d’origine autochtone. ».
