Marshall was born in Buffalo, NY on Feb 23rd, 1840. He was the son of Sherman Fairchild and his wife, Jane "Adelaide" Danforth Fairchild. He traveled with his parents and sister Nancy to the new territory of Ohio. Marshall was the eldest of nine children. His family came west from Mexico, Oswego, New York.

Marshall was a veteran of the US Civil War and was in the Union Army. He was a member of the Grand Army of the Rebublic, Joseph Hooker Post, Mt. Vernon, Ohio.
