About Martha Wooldridge (Osborne)

John Wooldridge (Sr.) worked as a blacksmith after his emancipation, staying in the Conjuror's neck area. He married Martha Osborne, (daughter of Edward Osborne) about 1704 or 1705 of the more established Osborne family, and began to raise a family. Captain Thomas Osborne came to Virginia in 1616 and took over the Coxendale tract abandoned after the 1622 Indian massacre there, and patented additional land on Proctors Creek where years later a town bearing his name was started.

They had the following children:

  1.   F i Marie Wooldridge
  2.   M ii William Wooldridge
  3.   M iii John Wooldridge
  4.   M iv Thomas Wooldridge
  5.   M v Edward Wooldridge
  6.   F vi Mary Wooldridge
  7.   M vii Robert Wooldridge was born in 1718. He died in 1794 in Chesterfield Co., Va.

Notes

  1. "Marriage of the first John Wooldridge (the blacksmith) to Martha Osborne is unproven, but is likely enough to have made it into the authoritative work: Adventurers of Purse and Person, ed. Dorman (3rd ed. 1987), p. 470, note 33. I did not have a death date for Martha and would like to know the source of the 1759. Adventurers also gives the Osborne line, and Edward (Martha's father) was the son of Thomas Osborne and grandson of the first Thomas Osborne. The Goode marriage you mention does not show in Adventurers, or in Elizabeth Harrell, The Osbornes (n.p. 1983, 1986)."

Sources

  1. St. John's Church, Bristol Parish, showing that Martha Osborne married Thomas Edwards on 26 October 1693. The Nugent abstract is from Patent Book 10, page 392. Edward Osborne's will naming daughter Martha is Henrico Deeds and Wills 1688-97 p. 707. Martha's possible marriage to John Wooldridge is inferred not from a specific record but from Martha's associations with this Osborne family and its connections, and from property left to Martha Osborne by Edward Osborne which John Wooldridge may bequeath to his own son Edward (named after Edward Osborne?) in his will.
