About Martin Wood

Mormon Pioneer Overland Travel 1847–1868 Unknown Companies (1847-1868) Age at departure: 30

On July 30, 1839, Esther and Martin Wood were married in Quincy, Illinois. Martin Wood was born February 24, 1818 in Independence, Ohio, the son of Henry and Esther Cranmer Wood.

In 1848, they came west with their three children. Esther was an invalid and lay in the wagon most of the way.

Martin was a miller by trade, and he was sent by Brigham Young to Nephi to build a grist mill. They lived there for ten years before coming to Millville in 1860.

In 1863, Martin was called on a mission to England, the first missionary called from the Millville Ward. He was unable to finish his mission because of poor health. On the way home, while traveling through Wyoming with a company of Saints, his wagon tipped over and he was severely injured. He died soon afterward on September 14, 1864 and is buried near Evanston, Wyoming.
