About Mary P Burnett (Kennedy)

Mary Kennedy-Cooper Burnett came to California with the Cooper family, and in 1853 married John Cooper in Saramento. In 1854 John and Mary Cooper had a son Charles at the San Juan Batista Mission. John Cooper mysteriously disappeared and Mary married Wesley Burnett. Later, when the Burnetts were living a Cayucos, Mary was visited by her brother, Robert Kennedy, who had just been released from the Union Army. One day Mary was assisting her brother in the task of hitching a horse to a rig when it seemed necessary for her to give the horse a good whack on the rump with a stick. The horse responded with a hard kick which left Mary crippled with a bad hip and generally poor health. Burnett lost his 28 year old wife on January 10, 1878. He buried her on a hill overlooking his Rancho Corral de los Mulos, on a tract of land which later would become the Adelaida Cemetery.
