- The Carr family had been Virginians since Colonel Thomas Carr of "Topping Castle," England, emigrated to King William County, marrying Mary Garland. Representing that county in the House of Burgesses, 1727 to 1734, their son, Major Thomas Carr, 1678-1734, and his wife, Mary Dabney, were the parents of William Carr, 1707-1760, of Spottsylvania County.
