Her husband. Jonathan Fairbanks, was killed by Indians at Lancaster, Mass., September 4, 1697; she was taken captive, but was returned January 17, 1699, on the Province Galley from Casco Bay. While in captivity she acquired a knowledge of herbs which resulted in her afterwards dispensing medicine and being called "Doctress."

Mary Hayward, b. Dec. 5, 1666 in Concord, Vt., daughter of, Joseph and Hannah (Hosmer) Hayward, who is a descendant from Resolved White, who came over on the Mayflower. She married (1) Aug. 24, 1688 to Jonathan Fairbanks. He is the son of Jonas and Lydia (Prescott) Fairbanks of Watertown. When Jonathan was about 10 years of age, his father was killed in the Lancaster Indian Raid of 1676. After that, as he matured, he became a soldier but lost his life in the Indian Raid of Lancaster in 1697 along with his daughter Grace. They had three children which are: Hannah, Grace and Mary. Grace was around seven years old when her life was taken from her. Their mother Mary was taken captive along with others in Lancaster and taken and held in Canada until the government got her released. On Jan.17,1699 she was put on the ship "Province Galley" to Casco Bay. While in captivity she acquired a knowledge of herbs which resulted in her afterwards dispensing medicine and being called "Doctress." On May 31, 1700, she married (2)David Whetcomb of Lancaster, Ma. in Concord. David is a inn-keeper and had many duties in performing his job. They lived in the Southeastern corner of Bolton, Ma., where they kept a Tavern. To this union, they have six children: Benjamin, David, Jonathan, Joseph, Rebecca and Simon
