About Mary Newton (Hooker)

Mary Hooker (Newton) was the daughter of Rev. Thomas Hooker, the founder of the colony of Connecticut. She was the second born child to his first wife, Mary Hooker. With the first born daughter dying in infancy Mary lived the role of the eldest child in a family of seven children including her stepbrothers and stepsisters (including yet another dying in infancy).

Mary's mother died when Mary was three or less years old. Her father remarried to Susannah Garabrand when Mary was three. Her family moved to Holland from England and then sailed on the Griffin to the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1633 when she was fifteen. In 1636 her family then settled in what became the capital city of Hartford in the present day state of Connecticut.

Mary married at age 26 to Rev. Newton in 1644 and settled in the new village of Milford, Connecticut.

These two are listed as children in Geni but are likely not hers due to age (5) or before her recorded marriage date (1644): 1. Jane Alford (Newton) 1623-1715 married Alford and had two children. 2. Hannah Phelps (Newton) 1636-1671 married Joseph Phelps I and had four children.

These may be her children: 3. Samuel Newton 1646-1708 married three times to Mary Fenn, Sarah Welch and Sarah Fowler. He had a total of nine children. 4. Roger Newton 1648-1690 5. Susannah Burnwell Stone (Newton) 1654-1703 had two children with husband Samuel Burnwell Sr. then four children with husband John Stone. 6. John Newton 1656-1699 married Lydia Ford. Ezekiel Newton 1659-1734 7. Mary Jackson (Newton) 1664-1679 married Edward Jackson. 8. Alice Buckingham (Newton) 1664-1694 married Edward Jackson.

This biographical sketch is based on the estimate that Mary was born in 1618.
