About Mather (Matthew) Patrick

According to a deed from his father, Mather (Matthew) Patrick, Robert Coon's 5th great grandfather was listed as a cordwainer, a person who works with leather which can include a shoemaker, a harness/ saddle maker or maker of other leather goods. Another deed listed him as a shoemaker. He was definitely literate. But he was suspended with others from church communion on Oct. 7, 1746 at the Sterling Congregational Church in Voluntown, Ct. The reasons given in private session seemed insufficient to justify them so communion was withdrawn until the scandalous and disorderly walkers pleased "the gracious God to give them grace to repent and reform". This was read publicly and done accordingly that same day.

According to his grandson, John W. Patrick, he was very deaf in old age and could only be communicated with writing or with signs. His grandson said he was a short, thick-set man. He sold his lands in Voluntown, CT after the Revolution and moved to Stillwater, NY where he and his wife, Elizabeth, lived their final years.
