Mattie was the daughter of Jim and Lummie Jacobs Mitchell. She was the twin sister of Cattie Mitchell Hunt. She married G. W. Oxendine, but they were divorced at the time of her death.
The following was taken from the Jun. 11, 1934 edition of THE ROBESONIAN:
Mrs. Mattie Oxendine, former wife of G. W. Oxendine, of near Fairmont, died Sunday at 3 p.m. following 11 months' illness. She was taken to the county home, where she stayed for only a short time, there the end came.
Deceased was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jim Mitchell, of near McDonald. She was a devoted wife and mother and will be greatly missed in the community. She was 40 years old.
Mrs. Oxendine is survived by 4 children, Misses Inest, Mazola, Messrs. Dannie, J. L.; 3 brothers, Messrs, John, Jimmie, Fernie Mitchel; 3 sisters, Mrs. Raymond Hunt, her tiwn sister, who took her home after her death and where she spent the night, Mrs. William Fraymon, Mrs. Giles Hunt.
Funeral services were conducted at New Bethel church by Rev. J. E. Hunt and Tommy Sweat in the presence of a host of relatives and friends.
Pallbearers were Messrs. Marie Oxendine, Marvin Hammond, Henard Rogers, Elwood Camel, Thomas Chavis, Fred D. Chavis. Flower girls were Misses Daisy Alburta and Girtha Chavis, Verda Belle Locklear, Betty Hunt, Mrs. Tommy Hunt, Mrs. David Jacobs. She was laid to rest under a beautiful mound of flowers.
