About Myrtle Maxine Cohen
Maxine, her sister Betty (Seril Elizabeth) and mother Clara Ann Myrtle lived in the Laurelhurst neighborhood, 38th and Stark for over fifty years. I grew up spending weekends there, with Maxine as my personal tour guide. Like her mother and sister, Maxine worshiped G-d, and all things “proper”. No work on Shabbat, so we were not allowed to do any work on that day of rest. We read Scripture, prayed, loved G-d and fellow man, hear no evil, see no evil, and speak no evil. When the Junior Rose Court called me to escort one of the princesses in the events that year Maxine was my guide in all things “proper”. She did not crack the whip, but taught with patience, kindness, and love. She retired from federal government service having worked as an administrative secretary for the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA), Vets Admin, and the SBA. In the days when a single monster IBM magnetic tape computer took up floors of the high rise federal building where Maxine worked, she made sure I had security clearances, access to learn about how this computer worked. The control room, which controlled the west coast electrical power grid was an amazing place. In those days she worked for BPA administrator Don Hodell coordinating the BPA jet time, hotels, meetings, conferences, etc.
