Milton Holbrook Willis was born October 17, 1841 in Augusta, Georgia. He was the son of Anthony Gabeau Willis and wife Sophronia Shecut. He enlisted in the Carolina Light Infantry (CSA) at Fort Sumpter,. When that site was captured, his unit was transferred to Virginia and saw constant action. Milton was captured at the Battle of Gettysburg, Gettysburg, Pennslvania, July 1863. He was taken to Fort Delaware, which was being used as a prisoner of war camp. He died in 1863 at Fort Delaware prison. It is not known if he died from wound or from smallpox, as the fort's records show a major outbreak in that year.
