About Minna Lauchheimer (Bodenheimer)

Mina survived the war and came to the states after her husband Henry died circa 1950, from Brussls. Mina died in the early 1960s either in New York or New Jersey.

Helene Caspary wrote,

My Mother, Minna Bodenheimer, was born in Heidelberg, Baden, Germany. She was one of 9 children, six sisters and two brothers. The children were the product of three mothers, two of them died in childbirth. My Mother never knew her own Mother, but Grandpa was such a good father that the children never even spoke about the fact that some were half-sisters and brothers. Even in later life, we cousins never spoke about this fact. In 1903, my Mother came to Brussels, where her sister, Aunt Bertha Loeb and her teacher husband had a boarding school. My Mother was called upon to help her sister with the two kids, Marcel and Eric. My parents met in Aunt Bertha’s house and they married in 1906 in Carlsruhe, Germany.

In 1943, my parents and my mother-in-law were arrested by the Gestapo. They came at night, broke the windows to get in and asked my parents if they were hiding anybody. My Mother took the Gestapo around the entire house and all they could discover was my poor Mother-in-law who was living with them since Dad and I had left. All three were taken to an assembly point and from there my Mother-in-law was shipped to Auschwitz as we eventually learned. No trace of her was ever found.

I asked my parents to look after my Mother-in-law, who now was totally alone. My parents took her to live with them until she was deported in 1943 and never heard of again. At that time, my parents were arrested also. The Gestapo came through the windows during the night and brought them to a deportation station.

Miraculously, Queen Elisabeth of Belgium intervened and requested not to deport the Belgian Jews over 60 years of age. My parents were sent to a Camp near Brussels. While gone, their entire house was emptied and it contained a number of our valuables.
