He visited South Carolina and Georgia in 1797 and again in 1804-5. He visited the northern states in 1810-11. He visited the Indian tribes in Canada, England, Scotland, and Ireland during 1820-21and in 1832 extended his visits to the newer meetings in Ohio and Indiana,whither many of the friends had emigrated from Virginia and the Carolina to escape the slavery problem. This weakened the meetings in North Carolina.

He was very deeply interested in education and was instrumental in organizing the New Garden boarding school from which since has grown Guilford College at Springfield, North Carolina. His portrait hangs in the faculty parlor of Founders Hall. He died at Center, Guilford Co. North Carolina. The Memoirs of William and Nathan Hunt, mostly from their journals and letters, were published in Philadelphia in 1858.
