About Nicolas Shirey

  • Excerpt: HISTORY OF MONROE TOWNSHIP By C. F. McNutt, and W. W. Deatrick. "Nicholas Shiry came from Westmoreland county to farm now owned by his son Reuben, in 1820."
  • Capt. George Ritter's Company, PA Militia, War of 1812
  • "Nicklaus Scheurer to living near Greensburg, Westmoreland County, PA as early as 1772. His name appears on a petition to establish Fort Allen in 1773 for the purpose of defending the community of Harrold's Settlement (between Greensburg and Youngwood) from the Indians. The fort was later used during the Revolutionary War. The name evolved from Scheurer to Scheury to Shirey and I am descended from Nicklaus, Nicholas, Nicholas and David Sechrist Shirey (whose younger brother is Nicholas.) My line went from Greensburg area to Smithton area all within Westmoreland County, PA. The second Nicholas married Jane Kelly who died giving birth to their second child, Hannah. Jane's sister, Nancy Kelly, took young Nicholas and Hannah and raised them."
