Nicholas II was the last Emperor of Russia, Grand Prince of Finland, and titular King of Poland. His official title was Nicholas II, Emperor and Autocrat of All the Russias and he is known as Saint Nicholas the Passion-Bearer by the Russian Orthodox Church.

Er war ein Cousin ersten Grades von Georg V., König von Großbritannien und durch seine Heirat mit Alix von Hessen-Darmstadt ein angeheirateter Cousin von Wilhelm II., deutscher Kaiser und König von Preußen (gleichzeitig aber auch – durch seine Abstammung von Charlotte von Preußen, der Ehefrau seines Urgroßvaters Nikolaus I. – Wilhelms Neffe dritten Grades).

Der Ehe mit Alexandra entstammten fünf Kinder, die alle zusammen mit den Eltern am 17. Juli 1918 erschossen wurden:
