"...Taylor, Norman – (14th Ten) Born Sept. 15, 1828, at Grafton, Lorraine Co., Ohio, to Benjamin and Ann Mennel Taylor. He was teamster of the first company drove the second wagon that entered Salt Lake Valley. He assisted in preparing for the oncoming pioneers and then returned to Winter Quarters, where he married Laurana Forbush. He brought his family to Salt Lake Valley in 1850, and in 1851 went to southern California and settled in San Bernardino. Recalled because of the threat of Johnston's army, he settled in Santaquin, Utah Co., Utah. He moved his family again in 1881 to settle in Moab, Grand Co., Utah. There he set up a blacksmith's shop, operated a ranch and was owner and operator of a ferryboat across the Colorado River. He was a merchant in his later years and died Nov. 25, 1899, at Moab at age 71 years old..."

A Pioneer Passes Away. Death of Norman Taylor

The news of the death of Mr. Norman Taylor of this place, who died at Salt Lake City last Saturday cast a gloom over this valley in which he has taken such a prominent part for so many years. When he left here some weeks ago on a business trip to eastern cities he appeared in unusually good health. He returned in company with his sons but continued on to Salt Lake from Thompson to visit his wife who had been at Salt Lake City under medical treatment for sometime and regarding whose health he had showed much anxiety. It was there where he was taken with his fatal illness. The remains reached Moab on Monday accompanied by his wife, and sons who were at his death bed.

Mr. Taylor was one of the first pioneers who came to Utah, driving the second wagon into Salt Lake valley in 1847. He returned to Council Bluffs the same year where he was first married and a year later returned to Utah, a few years later he moved to California where he spent a number of years. He came to Moab in the early 80's and since then this has been his home and the home of a large number of his children. He went to St. Joseph, Missouri.

1846 - In Council Bluffs, Iowa Territory, he enlisted in the Mormon Battalion. His name appears on the muster-in records, but is cancelled by a line drawn through it. His name does not appear on subsequent rolls; therefore, it is assumed that he did not march with the battalion (Archives 351).

1847 - He crossed the plains with Brigham Young's first company, he was chosen because of his skill as a wheelwright although he was only 18.

1847 - Driving a team and outfit belonging jointly to himself & Nathan Chesley

1847 - July 24, drove the second team to enter the Salt Lake Valley.

1847 - Four weeks later Norman returned to Winter Quarters with Pres. B. Young

1848 - Apr 2, married Lurana (listed as Lovenia) Council Bluffs, Pottowatomie County, Iowa by Amos Condit. Macedonia Church records
