About Oliver Hazard Perry Brewer, Sr.
Perry Brewer attended Cherokee Nation schools in what is now Oklahoma, including the Cherokee Male Seminary. He went on to attend schools in Arkansas. In 1849 went with other Cherokee gold seekers to California. He returned to the Cherokee Nation in 1851 but made a second trip to the west coast in 1852, where he remained for 2-3 years before returning home again.
Although a farmer, Brewer was elected to the Cherokee Senate in 1859. At the start of the Civil War Brewer became first lieutenant of the Confederate army's Company C of the Cherokee Regiment under Captain Daniel Ross Coodey. He was appointed Lieutenant Colonel by war's end.
Brewer was elected superintendent of the Cherokee Nation in 1881 and was appointed to the Cherokee Nation's Supreme Court in 1890. He died in office in 1891.
