About Baskaran Menon Pulloottupadath

P. Bhaskaran, who is affectionately called ‘Bhaskaran Master’ by his admirers is a Poet, Playwright, Lyricist, Actor, Broadcaster, Cine Director, Film Producer, T.V. Producer, Tele-caster, Intellectual and a Humanist – all combined in one. He was born on 21 April 1924 as the son of Padmanabha Menon and Ammalu Amma, at Cranganoor (Kodungalloor) near Irinjalakuda. He had his early education at Kodungalloor High School and college education at Maharaja’s college, Ernakulam. Drawn to politics, he participated in the Independence Struggle of 1942 and subsequently joined the Communist Movement. He was imprisoned several times during his political career in the erstwhile States of Cochin, Travancore and Madras. He relinquished politics in 1948.

During 1940s, he edited a Madras based weekly, ‘Jayakeralam’ for sometime. The year 1954 was a landmark year in the life of P.Bhaskaran. He tied the nuptial knot with Indira in 1954. His debut film directorial venture in 1954 along with Ramu Kariat, ‘Neelakkuyil’ won the Certificate of Merit from the President of India. This was the first South India film to earn such a laurel. He joined as Producer in the All India Radio, Kozhikode Station in the year 1959.

Basically a poet, P.Bhaskaran published his first collection of poems when he was 20 years old. So far he has published 20 books, mainly Collection of Poems. Though poetry was his first love, he has made significant contributions to Malayalam cinema. He has created cinema that helped promote social and national consciousness. Other ingredients in his cinema were exquisite music and magnificent visuals. It is often suggested that P.Bhaskaran’s finest and most enduring contribution to Malayalam film world is his lyrics numbering about 3,500.
