Life and family

  • He was the son of Antonio Alvarez de Toledo and Perez de Guzman, XI marquis of Villafranca, and Maria Antonia Gonzaga and Caracciolo, daughter of the Duke of Solferino I.
  • His father died when she was only 8 years, was Gentleman of the Royal House of Fernando VI and chief butler of Queen Barbara of Braganza. He had also been Director of the Board of Directors and President of the Office of the State.
  • Very young, and as his two older brothers, go to the Royal House as Gentleman of the Royal House. (His older brother José Alvarez de Toledo y Gonzaga had married the famous Cayetana de Silva y Álvarez de Toledo, thirteenth Duchess of Alba, but died in 1796.)
  • He in turn married Maria del Carmen Fernandez Josefa de Zuniga y Velasco, daughter and heir of the Duke of Penaranda de Duero and Castañar Counts of Miranda. He soon won the confidence of the Prince of Asturias Fernando and initiates a close friendship with him.
  • After the War of Spanish Independence and the return of the King, he was appointed Lord Steward and therefore head of the Royal House, in June 1815.
