About Peter Bray, Sr.

  1. Peter BRAY
  2. Surname: BRAY
  3. Given Name: Peter
  4. _AKA: Peter BRAY, Sr.
  5. Sex: M
  6. Birth: ABT 1718
  7. Death: AFT 1790 in , Rowan/Surry, North Carolina, USA
  8. Note:
According to some researchers he was a Protestant minister, but according to others he was a Quaker. His wife Martha SCOTT was the daughter of Abraham SCOTT, "a free person of color".
PETER BRAY was born abt. 1718 (estimated, but this date has become accepted by tradition), and he died in Rowan/Surry Co, NC. Peter Bray was described in a piece of manuscript from Hancock County, Tennessee records as a short, red-headed Englishman (but this may pertain to his son, Peter Bray Jr., who was the one who migrated to Tennessee). Many of Peter's descendants had red hair, as shown by their WWI draft registration cards and other sources.
Some researchers say that Peter Bray (Sr.) lived in Maryland before coming to North Carolina. He married MARTHA SCOTT abt. 1742 in Bertie Co, NC. She was the daughter of ABRAHAM SCOTT and UNKNOWN. She was born before 1730, perhaps in Bertie Co, NC, and died in Rowan, Surry Co, NC. Most researchers list the children of Peter Bray and Martha Scott as being born in Brunswick Co., VA, although some say North Carolina. It is known that Peter had lived in Pasquotank Co., NC. In the 1790 census three of Peter and Martha's sons, Peter, Benjamin, and Bryant, were living in Sampson Co., NC.
It is quite puzzling that many family trees report that Peter Bray was born in England and came to America in the 1840's. Obviously, if he was born about 1718, he had already died long before 1840. And he married Martha Scott about 1742 in Bertie Co., NC according to most researchers, so was obviously in America long before the 1840's. Perhaps they meant to say 1740's?? (perhaps whoever submitted the first family tree in this line mistakenly wrote down 1840's then everyone else copied it??) Otherwise it is completely baffling.
I have also seen no proof for the claim that he was born in England. It is quite likely that he was born in Virginia or one of the other colonies, and that the description "Englishman" described his ethnic origin rather than his birthplace. Thomas Bray "of Virginia" bought land in Bertie Co., NC in 1718, and that is where Peter Bray also lived. Thomas may have been some relation to Peter, because no other Brays are listed as owning land there in the early years. Thomas Bray was of the Williamsburg, VA Brays. Peter Bray may also be related to the Camden/Currituck/Pasquotank Co. NC BRAYs. It is known that Peter Bray, Sr. had lived in Pasquotank Co, North Carolina, and that he was a minister. He probably had more children, but these are the only ones I know of that have been proven.
Notes from Edna Reece,THE BRAYS OF FISHER RIVER:Peter Bray and his wife, Martha moved to Sampson County, North Carolina by 1761 and they were listed on that County's Tax List.
