About Peter Ford, Sr.

A Patriot of the American Revolution for VIRGINIA. DAR Ancestor # A131476

Peter Ford.

Peter married four times. He first married Judith Maxey. Judith was the daughter of John Maxey and Sarah Sampson. He married second, Unknown. He married third, Widow Brooks. He married fourth Sarah Sloan, December 15, 1791 in Madison County, Kentucky.

In 1786, Peter Ford joined the McKnitt Company on the move to Kentucky. His sons Joel and John and his father and brothers James and Boaz remained in Buckingham County, Virginia.

They reached a camp site on the rise above Little Laurel River just two miles south of London, Kentucky and being so near their destination they apparently relaxed their security in celebration of their successful journey.

On the night of October 3, 1786, a band of Miami Indians attacked the McKnitt Company. According to Z.F. Smith, History of Kentucky (1886) in October 1786 a large number of families known as the McKnitt Company were surprised new Laurel River and over twenty killed, dispersed or taken prisoner.

Peter Ford made his will in Madison County, Kentucky on March 4, 1798 and his will was proven on October 5, 1801. In his will he refers to fifty acres of land, I give my daughter Polly, if she is ever recovered from the Indians. Polly was recovered shortly after her fathers death and married John Prewitt on September 1805 in Madison County, Kentucky.

The above information is from the Genealogy of Hill Family 1978 by L. Henry Hill as printed in the Huguenot Publication.

His family was part of the group that was attacked by Indians "Dewitt's defeat". Three girls were abducted. Mary "Polly" stayed with the Indians for about 20 years, and then returned. Her half-sister Ann escaped, but their cousin Judith Maxey has not been accounted for.
