140 Regent Street - formerly the studio of Philip Augustus Barnard

Philip Augustus Barnard was born in 1812 in Hampshire where he was to become an artist and photographer. By 1854 he had a Photographic Studio at 140 Regent Street and in 1856 he move along the street to number 188.

In 1860 he again moved his Studio this time across the street to 131 and it became his place of work and the family residence. In 1857 he advertised his newly invented calilampetic "colour photos" in the Times. In 1871 he was joined by his son, Walter Saunders Barnard also an artist and photographer.

Sadly in 1883 father and son were jointly declared bankrupt.  Henry Graves rescued the Barnard family when he had their company re-registered in his name. Henry Graves was himself a portrait painter and photographer cum publisher at 205 Regent Street where he lived until his death.

It appears the Barnard family continued to live at 131 and Walter continued as an artist until the early 1900s.
