Another link in the chain which connects the Clitheroe of seventy years ago with the present day life of the town has been severed with the death of Mr. Philip Birtwell, which took place very unexpectedly at Castle View, on Tuesday midnight. As was his daily custom, Mr Birtwell, who was 76 years of age, was out and about on Tuesday, and spent about two hours in the reading room at the Liberal Club in the afternoon. He returned home at about four o'clock, apparently in his usual state of health, partook of a late tea, and retired about eight. When his wife went upstairs about midnight he was breathing heavily. He asked the time and expired almost immediately afterwards.
