1820 British Settler

Philip John Frost 32, Husbandman, together with his wife Elizabeth Doughty 30 and their 6 children, were members of Damant's Party of 57 Settlers on the Settler Ship Ocean.

Party originated from Norfolk.

Area Allocated to the Party : The old Waaiplaats barracks, then to the Gamtoos River. They were located at the source of the Kaffir Kraal River but the location was at once rejected by Lieutenant Damant and they moved to the Gamtoos River, their settlement being called Lammas.

Children :

  • Philip Frost 11
  • James Frost 10
  • William Frost 7

  • John Frost 4
  • Mary Frost - baby

----------------------------------------

A party of 57 from Norfolk led by Lieutenent Edward Damant sailed in the "Ocean" and after arrival were located at the source of the Kaffir River but the location was at once rejected by Lieutenent Damant and they moved to Gamtoos River - their settlement being called Lammas (later called Hankey). They then moved to Uitenhage where Phillip owned the brick and tile factory. The van Lelyveld boys worked for him and two of them married two of his daughters, Mary Nash & Ann Barnes.

Phillip Frost also had a building complex known as "The Fishery" consisting of a hotel and four cottages in the back, canteen with large stables and a large number of building plots

The Parentage of Christina Gertruyda Cornelia Clignet van Eetveld Frost Mitchell from "The Collegiate Church of S. Mary the Virgin" P.O. Box 566, Port Elizabeth - 25th June 1964. Letter addressed to: Mrs. Z. Williams, 48 Columbus Road,Claremont, Cape. Letter copy in the Family Files of Carol Van Mondfrans

Dear Mrs. Williams,

Thank you for your letter of the 16th instant and for the enclosed cheque.

I can find no trace in our registers of a marriage between Philip Frost and Christina Gertruida Cornelia Clignet van Eetveld aged 28 yrs., domiciled in the district of Uitenhage and buried on 11th November, 1842. Under the column for"occupation" there is a blank. This is not unusual in these old records if no details are known about the deceased, on the otherhand there is sometimes a great deal of detail as to how they met their death and who they were, etc.

If I may say so, it would appear that the daughter of Philip Frost and Christina Gertruida Cornelia Clignet van Eetveld was very possibly born out of wedlock, judging from the entry in the Baptismal Register, which reads as follows:

Year of Entry: 1844, No.646, 14th January. Christina GertruydaCornelia Clignet, represented by R. Berry, as proxy for John Berry, Emma Berry, and Hester Beneke, supposed daughter of Philip Frost and Christina Gertruyda Cornelia Clignet van Eetveld.

Under the column for the child's surname appears both the Father's and Mother's surname, which is usually an indication that the child is born out of wedlock.

As for the other columns, the Place of Abode is given as Port Elizabeth; Father's Profession: Brickmaker; Date of Birth: 7th September, 1842; By whom Baptised: F. McCleland, A.B., T.C.D.,C. Chaplain.

The mother was the eldest sister of Philip's son-in-law , Henry Jacob Clignet van Lelyveld.
