

P J H farmed at Jachtlust in Carolina District, Transvaal. He fought in the South African War in the South African artillery. In February 1902 he surrendered and in March 1903 submitted a claim for compensation for war damages. This consisted of 3 horses, one a mare; 3 large pigs, 6 small pigs and 22 piglets. He had chickens, geese and ducks, Goods lost included cured hides of cattle and blesbok, goose feathers, beans, salt, and tobacco. 2 chests of clothes belonging to his wife and children, as well as 2 tables, 2 stoels and a bench, a pot, and a copper coffee kettle. He claimed the loss of 60 bags of mielies over a two year period, which was disallowed. His total claim was about £222.00 but he received £73.
His daughter Anna Margrieta (Margaretha) Maria met her future husband in the Middelburg Concentration camp where he interrogated her. Peter MacDonald was a field guide in British Intellegence during the war.
