Placido Lizares Mapa was a sugar industry executive in the 1930s, comfortable in English and trained in high finance. He engineered the acquisition of sugar mills for his family's holdings in Bacolod during the golden age of the sugar industry. He served on the board of the White Cross on Santolan Street, San Juan (initially an institution for children of tubercular parents) and helped them solve the financial crisis after WWII.
