About Pvt. Gilbert L. Galloway

Gilbert L. Galloway (January 11, 1815 – November 23, 1893) was an American farmer from Goshen, New York.

Gilbert was born in Orange County, New York to Ruth (née Mapes) and Thomas D. Galloway. His great grandmother, Hendrickje "Hanky" (née Hogencamp) Mapes, was New Netherlands Dutch. His grandfather, James Galloway, was a 2nd Lieutenant in the American Revolutionary War.

Gilbert married Susan (possibly née Writer) and the two had six children, two of which died young: Susan L. Galloway (born June 1, 1842), Thomas J. Galloway (born 1846), Catharine R. Galloway (born 1848) and George R. Galloway (born 1854). Sometime before 1860, Gilbert and his family moved to from Goshen, New York to Washington Township, Bergen County, New Jersey.

During the American Civil War, Gilbert enlisted in Company I of the New Jersey 22nd Infantry Regiment on September 22, 1862, at the age of 46, in Trenton, New Jersey, and first served in the Defenses of Washington in Aquia Creek, Virginia to guard the railroad terminal, which by then had been abandoned by the Confederacy.

The regiment joined the Army of the Potomac in Belle Plains, Virginia on January 10, 1863, and participated in the "Mud March", where several days of heavy rain turned the roads of Virginia into a muddy quagmire, greatly lowering morale on both sides.

From April 27, 1863 to May 6, 1863, the regiment participated in the Chancellorsville Campaign, first at Pollock's Mill Creek from April 29, 1863 to May 2, 1863, and later at the Battle of Chancellorsville from May 2, 1863 to May 5, 1863. The Battle of Chancellorsville, one of the bloodiest battles in the Civil War, was an important turning point -- won by the Confederacy, but at a crippling loss of forces. Gilbert was mustered out on June 25, 1863 in Trenton, New Jersey.

After the war, Gilbert and his family relocated to Lewis, New York, then out west to Illinois by 1870 and Nebraska by 1885, alone with his son, George, presumably widowed by then. Gilbert is finally found applying for a pension on April 22, 1889 while living with his daughter in Bush Creek, Iowa.

Gilbert moved back to Nebraska to live with his son and died on November 23, 1893 at the age of 78.
