About James Jackson Hamilton
James was the son of Harvey William Hamilton and Mary Susan Kitchens Hamilton. He married Mary Elizabeth Williams on July 10, 1856 and the couple had three children. She died August 11, 1863 and James remarried in October 1864 to Eliza Jane Reed, a widow who was formerly married to Macy Barton. James and Eliza had five children. James served as moderator of the Sulphur Springs Primitive Baptist Association.
On February 18, 1862, James Jackson Hamilton enlisted in Company E, 28th Alabama Infantry at Walker County, Alabama, for three years or the duration of the war. The 28th Alabama fought under Gen Braxton Bragg as part of the Army of Tennessee for most of the war. They participated in the Kentucky campaign of 1862 and the battles at Murfreesboro, Chickamauga, Chattanooga, Atlanta, Franklin, and Nashville.
