About Rabbi Yechezkel Shraga Edward Halberstam הי"ד [of Vranov]

Information from Haya Rahel Rubin (R'Yechezkel Shraga was her mother's father): R' Yechezkel was the son of the Stropkover Rebbe, R" Menachem Mendel. When R' Yechezkel grew up, since his older brother was to become the Stropkover Rebbe, he became the Rov of the Chassidic kloiz in Vranov nad Teply, also in Slovakia. (There was supposedly a misnagdishe shul there as well led by a Rav Aharon Gruber.)

R' Yechezkel Shraga of Vranov and his Jewish community were among those murdered by the Nazis in the Holocaust (Shoah) in World War II. In 1939 the antisemitic Hlinka Party gained control of the Stropkov Town Council and the area and collaborated with the Nazis. From May-October 1942 the Hlinka deported Jews from the Stropkov and the Vranov areas to Auschwitz, Sobibor, Maidanek, and "unknown destinations". R' Yechezkel Shraga, his wife Chaya Sarah (Rubin), and his children Tzipora and Dovid were listed on a deportation list viewed by his daughter Chana Shaindel and his granddaughter Haya Rahel in Vranov in the year 2000. This list was in the possession of a self-appointed town historian (a non-Jew) in Vranov who was interested in preserving the history of the Jews of Vranov.

Chana Shaindel was told by the lone survivor of this deportation, that the Jews deported from Vranov were gassed in mobile vans. Chana Shaindel escaped because R' Yechezkel and his wife sent her away from Vranov prior to the deportation to visit her grandparents. R' Yechezkel's remaining two children, Shmuel and Chaim, were not on the deportation list and their fate is unknown by his descendants.
