About Rebecca Malinda Stevens Dustin

Unfortunately, Rebecca Malinda's mother, Rebecca Welker Stevens, died when she was only five years old, shortly after giving birth to her fifth child, Julia Ann. Rebecca Malinda went to live with her Uncle John Welker, her mother's brother, and his wife, Roxana Mahala Dustin Welker. Most of the Welker family had moved from Utah to the Blooomington, Bear Lake County area of Idaho Territory in 1863, at the request of the Mormon Church. Their company was headed by Charles C. Rich.

The 1870 U.S. Federal Census for Bloomington, Bear Lake County, Idaho, shows Rebecca Malinda Stephens (spelling?), 11 years old, living with her Uncle John, 44, and Aunt Roxana Mahala Welker, 36, along with their daughter Roxanna Louisa, 19, son John Eller Welker, 17, and a cousin, Levi Dustin, Jr., age 5 years old.

Living next door to the Welker's was Christian Madsen, age 24, with his wife Roxana Louisa Welker Madsen, age 18, and their one year old daughter Dorothy R., my great grandmother, Dortha Roxana Madsen Rollins McKinney. It's strange that Roxana Louisa is listed in both households, that of her parents, and that of her husband, and that she was listed as being 19 years old in her parents' home and 18 years old in her husband's home. They were married October 10, 1867, so by 1870 there should have been no confusion about where she was living nearly three years after their marriage!

Interestingly, living next door to the Welker's and the Madsen's was George and Georgianna Osmond, English immigrants, and their six children. They were the great-grandparents of the famous 1970's singing group The Osmond's, including Donny and Marie Osmond. One of their daughters, Clara, married into the Welker family.

After living in Idaho for about twenty years, Rebecca's Uncle John and Aunt Roxanna Mahala Dustin Welker, and other extended family members, moved to Arizona in September of 1883. By that time, Rebecca had been married to her first cousin, Hyrum Nephi Dustin, since about 1875. Rebecca and Hyrum moved to Arizona along with their three small children and the rest of the extended Welker, Stevens, Dustin and Madsen families. One of their daughters, Hannah Rebecca, was born in Arizona about 1886 while Rebecca and Hyrum lived there. Soon after her birth, however, they returned to Rich County, Utah. Both of them passed away while living in Utah, so it appears they never returned to Arizona to live near their family members. Roxanna Mahala Dustin Welker's brother, Seth, was Hyrum Nephi Dustin's father. And since Roxanna Mahala Dustin Welker's husband, John, was the brother of Rebecca Welker Stephens, Rebecca Malinda's mother, Rebecca and Hyrum Nephi Dustin were cousins.

The following information about Rebecca Malinda Stevens Dustin was written by her daughter, Julia Alnora Dustin Cook, and was found on Family Search.org: What I remember about my mother. She was born April 3, 1858, at Salt Lake City. Her mother died in 1863 at Willard, Utah, when Rebecca was either four or five years old. Uncle John Welker brought mother to Bloomington, Idaho, to live with them. Her father also came to Bloomington and kept the two boys, (her brothers) Alexander and Roswell. They were older than mother and there were two girls younger than mother, Aunt Libby and Julia. They were raised in someone else's family. I don’t remember who. Aunt Julia was the baby when grandma died. I have heard mother say she helped her father as best she could when she was old enough to do so. (NOTE: One of the younger girls lived with her uncle Adam Welker, and the other lived with her paternal grandmother.)

Mother met and married my father, Jan 14, 1875, when she was 17 years old. They lived in Bloomington, Idaho, until after Hyrum Alexander Dustin was born. Mother’s health was not very good after that. She was a very small girl, never weighed more that 100 lbs. and at her death she weighed about 85 or 90 lbs. Mother was very anxious to move to town from up in the field so she could see people go by because she was not able to go out much. She died Sept 20, 1902. She had always wanted to go to Willard where her mother was buried and had planned a trip there with Aunt Polly and Robert Pope when she took sick. They were going for fruit and by the time they got back mother was dead and buried. This is about all I can remember about her except what I have already told in father’s history. She had three sons and four daughters, the last one died at birth. I remember so well the day of her funeral. They had a number of black horses go ahead of the casket with a white sash across the rider’s shoulders. Mother was a wonderful mother, very gentle and kind. (written April, 1959). NOTE: Julia Alnora Dustin Cook was only about 12 years old when her mother Rebecca passed away in 1902.
