Rene CHASTAIN, was born about 1745 in Buckingham Co, Virginia, where he continued to live throughout his life. This fact distinguishes him from his father's other sons. It also has confused him with his cousin, Rene CHASTAIN, Jr., who, too, lived his life in the same area and was born about four years earlier. Tax records distinguish the two as "Rene CHASTAIN , son of Peter" or simply "S. P.;" while his cousin was designated as Rane CHASTAIN, Jr., or "A. B. Preacher." Our subject was on the 1773 and 1774 tithes lists of Buckingham County with one tithe. He is reported to have married twice, first, to Rhoda Perault and, second to Martha Guerrant. He is reported to have died in Buckingham County on 21 March 1818. On 15 September 1818, The Richmond Enquirer carried this nonresident advertisement: " In Chancery, at a Court held for Buckingham County, 13 day of July 1818, Daniel Guerrant, complainant against Lewis CHASTAIN, Isham CHASTAINE, James Hudnall and Rhoda his wife, ____Jones and Elizabeth his wife, ____ Moss and Martha his wife, and Judith CHASTAINE, children and heirs of Rane CHASTAINE, dec., and said Martha CHASTAINE, widow and executrix of the Last Will and Testament of the said decedent. Defendants Lewis, Hudnall and wife, John, Jacob, and Wm. CHASTAINE are not residents of this state. [Allen, 1964] Some have confused this account presuming it to refer to Rane CHASTAINE, Jr., who did not

die until 1823. His obituary in the Richmond Enquirer was dated 21 November 1823.
